In a recent scene in my current book, the protagonist (who at that point had become comfortable with several magical abilities) tried something new and had a bizarre and rather unpleasant experience that did not cause her any damage, and concluded to not try that again. I think the reaction that many of the people I know would instead be "That was weird and kinda icky. What happens if I poke it again?" I'm not sure whether that was an unrealistic bit of character action or whether the people I know are just that sideways.
